本篇文章出自印光祖師文鈔,祖師陝西郃陽縣人,二十歲出家,多方行腳十餘年後至普陀山法雨寺閉關三十餘年,閱畢全藏三次,故而熟貫三藏,解行並進,自行化他,道高德被,臨終預知時至,生西示現種種瑞相,大眾公認為民國五大師之首。在祖師文鈔中有敘述淨土、因果、佛化家庭、辯證魔佛之別以及各類修學疑難雜症之解答。本篇是無錫金昌有居士收錄因果報應之事,期能淨化世俗人心,祖師讚歎其收集之功,並盼此書之流通,有功於世道人心,並做序文以明因果之要。此篇文章有幸於團體研學過,心雅居士知其大意之後譯為英文,冀其流通,並經愛蓮居士之指導,以期所譯之英文能符合文義。

望閱者一者依祖師開示能了解因果之大要,二者能通達英文,並依語文能力弘揚儒佛之正法。(編者)

A Record of Karma Retribution

(or A Record of the Buddhist Way of Causality)

Foreword

1.因果報應者,乃人事與天理或順或逆之影響也。

The Law of Karmic Retribution is related to people as that of their shadows and echoes, presaging favorable or adverse circumstances found fit in return to the merits or deserts of people's works as related to the Supreme Order.

2.故書曰:惠迪吉,從逆凶,惟影響。

So the Book of History says:「Righteous deeds bring good fortune; while vicious acts bring bad fortune. The reflections of the relationship are similar to shadow and echo.

3.人雖至愚,斷無幸災樂禍、避吉趨凶、願一切同人斥名唾罵,天地鬼神奪魄殛誅及死後靈魂永墮三途惡道受諸極苦。經百千劫莫之能出者。

Even with the most of stupidity, people would not take delight in mishaps and rejoice over calamities, avoid good fortune and approach ill fate, or wish to invite denunciation of their folks. Neither would people welcome seizure of their souls by supernatural beings which leading them to eternal recurrence of extreme tortures in the Three Evil Paths. Under such circumstances,there would be no hope for transcendence even after hundred thousands kalpa.

4.然其所作所為,多皆反其所願者何也。

But why did people tend to act against their prospective will of reasoning ?

5.由世少通人不提倡因果報應之道。

In reality,there were very few learnt persons of wide knowledge and sound scholarship who could thoroughly understand the Law of Karma Retributionthus not allowing the law to spread widely.

6.而家襲陋習唯知以自私自利相傳之所致也。

Furthermore,The ill tradition of passing down family legacy only to its descendents has selfishly restricted outsiders to apprehend and benefit from the knowledge.

7.間有所作所為順乎天理,內而家庭恪盡己分,外而交際務益於人,以及種種善舉悉皆奉行。

Now and then,there might be persons,though very few,conformed to the Supreme Order, recognized and fulfilled their familial obligations while assorted to benefit the society as a whole.They also devoted themselves to perform charitable works in different ways.

8.若恤災賑饑濟難扶危戒殺放生護惜物命持齋吃素誦經念佛,以期自他兼利幽顯均益者無不家門清吉子孫興隆富貴尊榮令人景仰。

If these persons are committed to alms giving such as: comforting victims of disasters, feeding those who starved, helping those in difficulties, saving those in danger, practicing ahimsa (abstaining from killing),freeing and protecting living things, fasting, pertaining to vegetarian diet, chanting sutras, and praying to Amitabha. All these are intended to yield the revealed and unrevealed benefits in promoting both individual and altruistic interests. In return, good deeds bring doer-families peace and luck; gain prosperity, wealth, and appellative titles to their descendants, as well as public respects and good reputation.

9.歷觀傳記凡賢哲挺生'功業傑出或道傳群聖之心或德為萬民之望者,其先代皆有利人利物資幽資顯之懿行陰德焉。

When perusing the biographies of our ancient sages and philosophers, readers would find them either benevolent guardians of all beings, or the heartiest transferors of sagacious teachings, or reputed moral leaders with admirable virtuous qualities. One could see that all their ancestors had been performers of good deeds, or doers or supporters of good conducts  benefiting peoples or other beings openly and privately.

10.然此特凡眼所見之緒餘耳,而其人之神識或上生天宮或高超佛國世間凡夫又何能悉知之而悉見之耶。

However, legacies in form of material returns observable by the earthly eyes but were only the odd bits of the law of causality able to answer. The essentials relevant to the spiritual capacities, consciousness, Heavenly realms, or the supreme Buddhist worlds are dimensions far beyond the visual perception and understanding of the earthly man.
